The Demon behind smiling faces: DEPRESSION..!!!

You look happy but deep inside you don’t feel it. Not even the things dear to you gives you joys. You shell in yourself from any good or bad vibes. Either you leave listening or else you jump into conclusions just on the basis of the lead. At times you feel anger running freely in your veins or else you may be numb like dead. That’s what depression does to you: it eats you from within.

Avi looked happy just like any other youth of 20s full of life. He will be seen in active participation in most events but the pills he intakes narrates altogether a different tale. Avi wanted to be a music producer, he inherited the art of music from

his mother but life seemed to have a different plan for him. A below average student by merit lacked basic interest in dull sums of commercial mathematics, leave alone solving dull company accounts or understanding the basic imports exports of the nation. He was forced by his family to get a degree in Business Administration. He did, he attended the course , participated in active college programmes, carried a cheerful face wherever he went and also secured some average cgpa that made his parents boast their neighbours but, none understood his hidden side. That side that died bit by bit everyday on seeing his guitar getting buried into layers of dust, that regret of leaving his passion for music . He got into serious drug addiction, got tangled into multiple sexual lusty relationships that gave him nothing but stress and rather enjoyed of letting go every control in his life. People thought it as quarter life crisis, some called it madness but the boy knew it was a disease rooting deeply within him. It’s depression.

Most of us are well aware of the causes and possible cures, if any of a variety of disease that ranges from normal flu to cancer but only those who have faced depression in their life, knows about it. What is depression at a first place?  Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, feelings, and sense of being well being.  People with a depressed mood may be notably sad, anxious, or empty; they may also feel notably hopeless, helpless or dejected. Other symptoms expressed may include senses of guilt, irritability, or anger. Further feelings expressed by these individuals may include feeling ashamed or an expressed restlessness. These individuals may notably lose interest in activities that they once considered pleasurable to family and friends or otherwise experience either a loss of appetite or overeating. Depression affects decision making abilities, insomnia, excessive sleeping or even fatigue in humans. Experiencing problems concentrating, remembering general facts or details, otherwise making decisions or experiencing relationship difficulties may also be notable factors in these individuals’ depression and may also lead to their attempting or actually committing suicide.

In India, every hour one student commits suicide which is mostly due to psychological causes. India has been ranked one of the highest in the world for these. As per a statistics of W.H.O IN 2015, almost 7,88,000 youths committed suicide in India alone.

The most dangerous thing about depression is that, it’s a silent killer and it makes people its victim before they can actually figure out what is wrong happening with them. Psychology states that, women are more prone to mood drifts and depression than men and teenagers and youths are mostly the prey of depression.

Depression is often mistaken as a state, which is not true anyways. It is more of a disease of mind rather than just a state. Depression can be cured, if treated well. There is multiple medications and meditation for this and one of the most important cures of it is counselling. In India, counselling is often related to mental illness and people hide their condition by the fear of being called mad. Due to certain stereotypes people chose to be silent, and this silence triggers the most adverse consequences of depression- suicide. People are subjected to bullying and acts such as calling names, abusing, and body shaming and even stalking worsens the state of depression

It takes years for onlookers to understand the illness and when they do, it might have almost killed the victim within. It is often said; depression eats you ounce by ounce. You get panick attacks, trust issues and room yourself aloof. At times, you may feel happ , at times you feel immense pleasure out of nowhere and at times, you may end up in soaking the pillow covers with tears.

Folks, personally I’ve seen depression from a very close angle. Avi is not a fictional character (don’t make that face, I write no fiction too) and I also know even among the ones reading this article, there may be many more Avi(s) of different age, colour and gender. If you ever come across a depressed soul, talk with him/her and start being a bit less judgemental. You never know the person’s past, even if you do, you would never know the stages he or she has been in. Depression is not a trend among gen Y as many say; it is a disease with a cure. Lend your ears and mind to these broken people and the ones suffering from this silently, remember it always, jumping off a high building is not the cure. Try to breathe free, bad things happen and it goes too. Keep faith and hold on, there is a mate always who will listen to you patiently- maybe it’s an animal, a diary or just an understanding pal.

Mate, let’s talk; please don’t be depressed.
